Lemon Turmeric Rice: A perfect side dish

Pre-wedding Turmeric

While I was preparing for my wedding, I tried to keep my diet as clean as possible. I have VERY sensitive skin and I never know what will make it flare up. I’m too cheap to get the testing done (don’t shake your head at me) to see what foods or products I’m allergic to. I decided, instead, to keep my diet very clean for pretty much 6 months before our September ceremony…because who wants a messed up face in her wedding pictures?! I kept gluten out of my diet, minimal dairy (goat cheese if I did have cheese), high protein and fats in the mornings, little to no added sugar, limited alcohol intake, and LOTS of vegetables.

In order to keep my skin SUPER clean right before the wedding, I didn’t wear make up for about a month, moisturized with coconut oil and vitamin E, and eliminated any foods that could even possibly trigger my skin to flare. Not gonna lie, my skin looked and felt damn good by the time our wedding day arrived. That being said, I also had a ritual of a cup of bone broth with ghee and turmeric every morning to really keep my body clean and strong. I read all sorts of different books on healing your gut and how the food you eat can directly affect your skin. I was turned onto the anti inflammatory properties and decided keeping everything as natural as possible was best right before a wedding. (Don’t go trying new beauty products right before you get married!!!)

Kris’s Morning bone broth recipe: 1/2c bone broth (I used Bonafide Provisions Chicken Bone Broth), 1tsp turmeric powder, 1/2tbsp ghee. In a small sauce pan, bring all ingredients to a boil and stir to combine. Pour in a mug and enjoy!

Post-wedding Sugars

Obviously after the wedding I decided to let loose a little bit and enjoy those things I couldn’t for the last 6 months. Gluten, sugar, wine, cheese, DONUTS, CHEESECAKE, DESSERT….man those things are delicious. However, I did immediately feel the effects of it all: bloating, discomfort, skin issues, lethargy. Post-honeymoon led into the holidays which kept my sugar vacation going. And NOW it’s time to really get back on track. I felt SO good during wedding prep and I didn’t really do anything too drastic. Keeping my diet clean still allowed me to eat some pretty tasty food. Now the focus is to minimize added sugar and maintain a clean, healthy diet with plenty of proteins and veggies. And time to add back that bone broth to my mornings!! Skip that coffee and hand me the mug of broth!

Lemon Turmeric Rice

Now that I’m back on my own bandwagon, I am returning to some of the simple recipes and ingredients I was cooking regularly during wedding prep. This time I want to jazz it up a bit and try new dishes with the same amazing health benefits.

Enter Lemon Turmeric Rice. This is a great side dish to serve along side a lean protein and a refreshing salad. Or perhaps toss some shredded chicken and some pine nuts and arugula with the rice and make it a complete meal! Lemon Turmeric Rice: A perfect side dish

  • 2tbsp ghee
  • 1/2 yellow onion-chopped
  • 2 minced garlic cloves
  • 1c uncooked brown rice
  • 1 1/2tbsp turmeric powder
  • 2c low sodium chicken broth
  • 1tsp salt
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • fresh chopped cilantro for garnish


  • In a saucepan over medium heat, add ghee, onions, and garlic. Cook until slightly translucent and soft.
  • Add rice and turmeric. Stir to coat rice
  • Add chicken broth and bring to a boil.
  • Cover and turn down heat and let simmer for 30-35 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and add lemon juice and salt. Stir to combine.
  • Plate and garnish with cilantro. Serve hot.
